Step 3: regular participation

What will be required of me?

This trial is what is called a "blinded-randomised" trial. This means that it is decided by draw if you are going to receive the active drug (Kineret®) or a non-active blinded substance (saline). Neither the doctor nor you will know which treatment you will receive. This will be revealed once the trial has ended.

Your participation in the trial will last about 10 months and requires that you inject the ”trial drug” (either Kineret® or saline) in your abdominal skin every morning for 9 months. There will be no changes in your usual medication as part of this study. Your insulin treatment will follow the customary guidelines for type 1 diabetes.

You must arrive fasting at every visit. The purpose of the visits is to measure how the insulin producing cells of your body are reacting to the treatment. At five of the six visits (about 3 hours) a small plastic catheter will be placed (an “IV line”) in a blood vessel on your arm for drawing of blood. You will then be asked to drink a standardised liquid meal composed of regular natural nutrients and during the next 2½ hours blood samples will be drawn (through the iv. line, which means only one prick in all), so that we can measure the changes in blood sugar levels and insulin.

There will be a short talk with the study doctor at each visit.
