Step 1: Get the Facts

What is the AIDA Study?

The purpose of the study is to investigate if the drug Kineret® can be used in the treatment of persons who, like yourself, have been diagnosed with the kind of diabetes we call Type 1 diabetes.

Kineret® is already being used in the treatment of patients suffering from arthritis and studies are now suggesting that it may also be useful for patients with Type 1 diabetes. The active substance in Kineret is interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, a blocker of an immune-signal molecule named interleukin-1. During inflammation this blocker is produced by your body to limit tissue damage caused by inflammation, and kineret is an exact copy of this naturally occurring molecule.

The cause of this disease is destruction of the cells in the body that produce insulin. In laboratory experiments, the active substance in Kineret® protects the insulin producing cells against this destruction.

Eighty persons with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes will be included in the trial.

We cannot promise any benefit for the patient from participation in this trial. The very reason for conducting this trial is to see if the treatment is effective. However, in the future patients may benefit from this trial in the form of improved treatment of Type 1 diabetes and maybe avoidance of treatment with insulin.
